The James Whitcomb Riley variety of dialect poem evidently travels well; Campbell here collects his newspaper verses of the homespun variety. With occasional mention of local figures; in one pleasing instance, Campbell attributes area economic growth to "Hawg Meat": "But it's brains backed up with hawg meat, / --Good old Berkshire simmered down / Into good hoss-sense and git-there / That has fetched us our renown." Irish, Modern American Muse, 4347.
