An attractive copy of an important novel from the French intellectual Mme de Stael, who spent much of Napoleon's reign in exile. This edition appeared after her death in 1817. Neat ink signature of Frederick Evelyn to the front free endpaper of each volume (though likely not that of Evelyn's great-great-grandson, who died in 1812).
