Oneida Reserve, N.Y. (Leonard and Company, Printers), March 6, 1851. 8vo, unbound, eight leaves, -48 pages. Some trifling soiling; a very good copy. Item #13465
The weekly newspaper of the perfectionist utopian Oneida Community and its leader John Humphrey Noyes, edited by Noyes' sister Harriet. This issue seems particularly preoccupied with the humility and criticism which Noyes advocated for the community; one of the Home-Talks issues a number of explicit criticisms again specific members of the community. Includes an article from George Cragin (a member of the Perfectionists' inner-circle, who with his wife Mary was part of a complex marriage with Noyes and Noyes' wife Harriet) on the need to cultivate a "plodding spirit." (Skinner adds an efitor's note that many community members have taken up the study of mathematics, "an excellent drill of the attention and patience, and a remedy for mental dissipation.").
