"Don't Pierce Your Ears! But ask Your Jeweler for a Pair of Yeoman's Improved Ear Rings, Which can be Placed on the Ear Without Piercing." The cartoon vignette shows two young women fastening their earrings--ones says, "Oh! how it does hurt! Is there no help for my trouble? the hold is nearly cut through, and they are very sore." The Yeoman's user responds, "What, Vic! Have you not heard of Yeorman's new Ear Rings? fastened without piercing. I have a pair, come and look at them; they are splendid." The Waukegan, Illinois manufacturer Yeoman advertises his patent clip-on earrings to jewelers; Yeoman took out patents on his clip-on device in 1874 (and the improved version in 1876). A fine example of ephemeral advertising art.
