Lorna Doone: A Romance of Exmoor.

Lorna Doone: A Romance of Exmoor.

Philadelphia: Henry T. Coates & Co., [between 1895-1903]. A later edition of this popular romance. 2 vols, 8vo, original gilt decorated blue cloth, 516 & 565 pages. Frontis in each volume, 49 plates. Original publisher’s gilt-printed blue oil-cloth dust jackets, gilt printed slipcase. Jackets spines somewhat darkened and a little splashed and a bit frayed at the heads and feet; slipcase a bit rubbed and soiled; a very good copy. Item #17622

A fancy edition of the popular novel first published in 1868, and an example of an uncommon survival of this format in cloth dust jackets and the publisher slipcase. The publisher operated under this name from 1895 until its sale to the John C. Winston Co. in 1903. See the University of Iowa’s “Lucile Project” website for much on the popular publishers of this era.

The slipcase printed in gilt on what one might now consider the upper end of the slipcase, suggesting the volumes were meant to be stored on the shelf with their spines upward, which would explain why the hinges are just ever so slightly cracking.
