Boston: Charles Crocker, Printer, 1823. First edition. 12mo, contemporary gilt-tooled calf, pages. Spine and edges slightly rubbed, boards a little bowed; some occasional light foxing; a very good copy. Item #18096
A schismatic hymnal, published the year Paul Dean (ecumenical, Trinitarian, embroiled with Hosea Ballou in Restorationist controversies) separated from the First Universalist Society in Boston and began building the Central Universalist church on Bulfinch Street. This characteristically tooled hymnal binding shows light abrasion to the upper panel, where it appears a previous owner’s name in gilt has been neatly abraded away. Early ink signature of M. L. Parker on the verso of the front free endpaper. American Imprints 12133 (under title) & American Imprints 11937 (under Boston, Central Universalist Church).
