[London]: Printed and Sold by J. Pitts, 14 Great St. Andrew Street, Seven Dials, [between 1802 and 1819]. One of many editions of this popular ballad. Broadside, 8.5 x 13 inches. Some light wear and toning; in very good condition. Item #18225
A penny ballad that seems to date at least to the mid-18th century, here printed on cheap paper, with all the expected entertaining elements of a slip ballad: an infant born under a bad sign to a rich knight; foster parents, hidden identities, doomed romance, illegitimate birth, attempted infanticide, Liverpool, a golden cup, dramatic irony, a happy ending. Roud number V9007; date supplied by Bodleian record Bod17963. This copy tipped along its upper ege to a backing sheet of cheap paper, perhaps extracted from a scrapbook. (No evident offset or acidic browning.).
