Who’s a good boy? The impulse toward kitsch in downstate Illinois antique shops can at times can become the Trojan Horse for sincere engagement, as with this evocative example of dog portraiture from a longtime horse show photographer Jack Schatzberg. (Schatzberg’s work has appeared in Vogue and Sports Illustrated.) The frame has its own evocative charms, and seems likely at one time meant to have complemented the veneer paneling and the sculpted pile carpets of my own late 1970s Central Illinois, Hundman Homes, ranch house neighborhood lifestyle.
