“Remote from the town, in a wood by the sea / Lived a family of cockroaches, honest and free. . . .” Early promotional literature for Black Flag insecticide, with informational text and testimonials opposite the facing pages of a cheerful illustrated verse tale (calling Raymond Pettibon) about the cockroach family reading the sad news of slaughter in the Bugville Gazette; the one dated testimonial bears the date of 1883, the year the product was launched. The design and manner of the pamphlet suggest it is at least contemporary to the product launch. Numerous penciled sums to the rear wrapper and the margins of a later page. Not found on OCLC.
