The Zodiac and its Mysteries; or, A Study of Planetary Influences upon the Physical, Mental and Moral Nature of Mankind by America’s Foremost Astrologer.

Chicago: A. F. Seward & Co., 1915. First edition? 8vo, original gilt decorated red cloth, 231, [1] pages, plus [64] page publisher’s catalog. Double frontis, illus. Spine a bit darkened, with some trifling wear at the head and foot of the spine and some light rubbing to the gilt; cheap paper a trifle toned, but supple; in very good condition. Item #18280

A popular astrology manual from a Chicago professor of the art and publisher of occult books; the extensive ads in the rear for occult books (as well as dream books, secrets to sales, sex manuals, mnemonic systems, etc.) include a number of titles from the industrious W. W. Atkinson (including titles under his various pseudonyms of Swami Bhakta Vishita, Swami Panchadasi, and Theron Q. Dumont) as well as L. W. de Laurence. The type batter and the conjectured original publication dates on some of the Atkinson titles lead this cataloger to suspect this is an early reprint of the 1915 edition of Seward (he republished the book with a 1923 copyright date) though none of the ephemeral early editions are especially common in decent condition.
