London: Printed For John Clarke at the Bible, 1724. Stated third edition. 8vo, recent polished quarter calf, brown cloth sides, xlii, 344 pages. Engraved folding table inserted, approx. 16 x 10.5 inches. Light damp-staining throughout (Cockburn was a naval physician, perhaps this is not inappropriate); a good, sound copy. Item #18620
Cockburn made his fortune curing the diarrhea of the Royal Navy. (He was also Swift’s physician in London.) Originally published as Profluvia ventris: or The Nature and Causes of Loosenesses Plainly Discovered (London, 1701), with earlier separate editions of Cockburn’s vomiting and purging chart also appearing. (See ESTC.) Early ink ownership inscriptions to the title page. This copy with the upper outer corner torn away from three successive leaves, with some loss (otherwise, collated and complete).
