Original promotional carte de visite (CDV) photo of two native Indian missionaries, Benjamin and Sarah, offered as a premium to a member of the Children’s Missionary Society of the Lutheran Church.

[N. p. n. p., ca. 1880]. Original photo measuring approx. 3.88 x 2.5 inches on a slightly larger printed mount. Some old spots of staining (as from ink?) to the verso of the mount and one corner of the recto, with a little light staining to the image; in good, sound condition. Item #18693

Caption title to the image completed in contemporary autograph ink, “Benjamin and Sarah, Village Preacher and Wife. Presented to [Casey Sutphen] by the Children’s Missionary Society of the Lutheran Church.” The printed notice on the verso notes the organization of the Children’s Missionary Society in 1873-1874, and its current membership of 20,000, “annual payment of 25 cents constitutes membership, and entitles he giver to the yearly present from the church.” The husband and wife evangelical team are dressed in sari and turban, etc. A little loss to the notice on the verso from mounting adhesion (since removed).
