“Mr. Lincoln, being called upon addressed the Convention briefly.” The uncommon proceedings of a national meeting in Chicago of some 2500 delegates, held to protest Polk’s veto of internal improvements and notable as Lincoln’s first trip to Chicago and his first address before a prominent national audience.
