Mechanical political cartoon envelope caricature portrait of Martin Van Buren, published during the 1840 presidential campaign. POLITICAL SATIRE, David Claypool Johnston.

Mechanical political cartoon envelope caricature portrait of Martin Van Buren, published during the 1840 presidential campaign.

[N. p. n. p., 1840]. Copper engraved portrait of Van Buren with hand coloring, approx. 5 x 3 inches plus moveable printed tab. Some light soiling around the corners and edges, a few small splashes to the blank verso; in very good condition. Item #18963

A handsome moveable piece of political ephemera: a smilling Van Buren caricature by David Claypool Johnston holds a cup that, when captioned “A beautiful goblet of White-House champagne,” bears the initials “M.V.B.” Upon sliding the tab, the caption reads “An Ugly Mug of Hard Cider,” and Van Buren’s “mug” indeed transforms to an eye-rolling grimace and his cup now bears the initials “W.H.H.”.
