New Year’s Address to the Patrons of the Ipswich Register. 1838 [caption title].
Ipswich [Massachusetts]: [Gray & Smith], 1838. First edition. Broadside, scant 12 x 5.81 inches, elaborate decorative type border. Old light folds; some light spots of foxing; in very good condition. Item #19848
An ephemeral, attractive, and witty carrier’s address for the patrons of this coastal Massachusetts newspaper, making much of the populist appeal of newspapers: “For patronage our gratitude / Is due to all the wise and good, / Who make our ‘Register’ the medium / Of wearing off an hour of tedium, / Or furnish matter for our columns, / Better by far than clumsy volumes. . . .” Two copies of this 1838 address in the Hay Harris collection at Brown; the Peabody Essex Museum notes a run of three Ipswich Register addresses, but the catalog entry is silent as to which years.
