Putnam and the Wolf; the Fools’ Pence; the Poor Man’s House Repaired; and Jamie.

New-York: Published by the American Tract Society, 150 Nassau-Street, [1832-1848]. Contemporary sheep spine, marbled boards, [2], 94 pages. Inserted frontispiece and one plate. Boards and hinges somewhat rubbed; a very good copy. Item #19875

Temperance tracts; Marsh’s “Putnam and the Wolf” being perhaps the best known. With separate section titles for each story. With the American Tract Society address suggesting pubilcation post-1832, and with the state of the imprint (per the AAS “Dating American Tract Society Publications Through 1876 from External Evidences: A Series of Tables”) likely printed prior to 1848, when the Society adopted a new typeface. The plates here appear to be steel engravings rather than woodcuts. Nice contemporary ink gift inscription to the front blank.
