Boston: American Metric Bureau, 1877. Second edition. 8vo (9.25 x 6 inches), original brick red cloth, gilt lettering, 70, 13, pages. Folding color plate, illustrations in the text. Spine a bit soiled; a little chipped at the head and foot of the spine; a very good copy. Item #20267
A presentation copy, inscribed in ink on the front free endpaper, “Prof. E. C. Pickering with compliments of Jno. Pickering Putnam.” First published in New York in 1874 by Hurd & Houghton, this new edition was published in the wake of the 1875 Treaty of the Metre; the introduction here notes the foundation of the American Metric Bureau in 1876, as well as new text on metric nomenclature, appended updates on the activities of the Bureau, new woodcuts, plus “a new chart, designed with great care and printed in colors, has been substituted for the old lithograph.” Putnam is largely remembered as an architect behind the innovation of the modern apartment building.
