Reading: Gedruckt bey Carl A. Bruckman, 1818. First edition. 12mo, contemporary calf spine, marbled boards, , 169, pages. Some pencil scribbling to the endpapers. Stained and browned throughout, with some evidence of occasional damp-staining; board edges rubbed, some soiling and wear; a good sound copy of a book that appears to have seen firsthand use as an equine remedy book. Item #20319
Per Brindle and Unger (as quoted in the Atwater catalog), this early Hohman collection of recipes (many medical, and preceding his "powwow" book, Der Lang Verborgene Freund, first published in Reading in 1820) was largely taken from Bartgis's Neuer Erfahrner Americanische Haus-und Stallarzt, published in Frederickstown in 1794--though Hohman seems, strangely enough, to have cut out some of the sympathetic magic in his version. With an 11-page list of subscribers in the rear. Austin 921; Atwater 1667; Rink, Technical Americana, 1860 (under dyeing and painting); Arndt 2312.
