Napoli: Saturnia, Premiata Fonderia Italiana di Caratteri, via Nuova Poggioreale (Edificio Lubrano), [ca. 1927?]. First edition. Original rather ornate printed white wrappers (13.38 x 9.63 inches), [4] leaves printed rectos only. Wrapped soiled and foxed; some light wear; in good to very good condition. Item #21608
A lovely specimen of a typeface of Gothic types, with a printed slug on the rear wrapper, “Fscicolo N. 35.” Despite its known association with Lubrano, Saturnia under this name does not seem to have left much of an obvious footprint; per the 31 December 1919 issue of the Milanese trade journal Giornale della libreria della tipografia e delle arti e industrie affini, Saturnia was a “collettiva (Alfredo e Gaetano Beolchi e Vincenzo Lubrano) fonderia caratteri da stampa ed ogni materiale tipografico di piombo, esercizio ed ampliamento azienda Vincento Lubrano. . . . durata nove anni, dal 29 Septembre scorso, prorogabile. Firmatari i signori Vincenzo Lubrano e Gaetano Beolchi.” Whether Saturnia was something of a Neapoloitan version of Nebiolo and Urania’s efforts together as Società Augusta remains (to this cataloger at least) unclear.
