Man in Genesis and in Geology: or, The Biblical Account of Man’s Creation, Tested by Scientific Theories of his Origin and Antiquity.
New York: Samuel R. Wells, Publisher, 1870. First edition. 8vo (7.63 x 5.25 inches), original gilt decorated blue cloth, 149, [3] pages. Cloth somewhat darkened in spots and a little rubbed; a trifle shaken; a very good copy. Item #16501
The abolitionist and New York City Congregationalist minister here in a series of lectures turns his hand to a fairly progressive attempt to reconcile the Biblical account of creation to modern geology, though he is dismissive of the evolution of man; he also ventures into social questions, drawing on his views of the primeval nature of man to argue against woman suffrage: “It is assumed that Woman will bring to the polls a soothing element and improve the moral results of elections. On the contrary, her greater intensity of feeling for *persons* would bring a keener acrimony into our political campaigns. We can not forget how the Women of the South incited the rebellion and inflamed its hatred and atrocity; nor that Woman produced the worst monstrosities of the French revolution; nor can we shut our eyes to the fact that in great cities the *Bridgets* would roll up the majorities of the demagogues, and that Washington would have its Maintenons and Pompadours to add their intrigues to its political corruptions.”.
