The first of several collections of verse from the Indiana native Parker (1833-1911), a long-time resident of New Castle, Indiana. Includes a number of pieces on the Civil War (friends killed at Corinth, the death of Lincoln, the glories of the Emancipation Proclamation), as well as details of Midwestern life: buckeye trees and sugar maples, the old spelling schools, etc. Pencil gift inscription from another New Castle, Ind. resident on the front free endpaper dated 1879; small ink signature below that.
