Leominster, Massachusetts: Printed by John Prentiss & Co. for Thomas Thacher, Princeton [Mass.], 1798. First edition. 12mo, original sheep, red leather label, gilt lettering, 114 pages. Lightly foxed throughout; some light rubbing; a very good copy. Item #18046
A posthumous selection of sermons from Rev. Peter Thacher (1716-1785) of Attleboro, one of a long line of Congregationalist Peter Thachers, this collection put together by one of his sons, Thomas. This copy with a minor curiosity to the student of American binding styles: the gilt lettering on the spine, “Thacher’s Sermons” uses, aside from the initial capital letters, lower-case lettering—an unusual style for the period. With neat 19th century ink ownership signatures to the front paste-down, front blank, and rear blank (a little loss from ink gall). Early cloth scrap bookmark. One leaf with a couple of flaws, but no loss of text. Evans 34638.
