Personal Recollections of the Drama, or Theatrical Reminiscences . . .

Albany, N. Y. Charles van Benthuysen & Sons, 1873. First edition. 8vo, original green cloth, gilt lettering, 316 pages. Frontis portrait of Forrest, one plate. Spine a trifle darkened; a little frayed at the head and foot of the spine and the corners of the boards; a few light spots to the upper board; a very good copy. Item #18821

An anecdotal account of the American theatre, with a focus on Albany; Stone includes the hoax of an apocalyptic egg ca. 1825 (the shell bore a message, “Oh ye sinners, repent, for the world will be burned on the tenth day of November!”) and its baleful effects on a local fireworks promoter, with sidelights on the payment of typesetters with lottery tickets. Stone includes as his final chapter a “complete history of theatres and other places of public amusement destroyed by fire in the United States, from 1798 to 1873.” Small later collector ink stamp to the front paste-down.

Price: $100.00
