Small 8vo, contemporary marbled boards, cloth spine and tips, [ii], 5-61, [2] pages (lacks wrappers; this may be an issue sold in boards). Illus. Some rubbing; some browning in the prelims, some light soiling and foxing throughout; a good, sound copy. Item #18870

Each number of this quarterly (for 1866) and eventual semi-annual (for 1867) songster serial of music for sabbath schools and children’s classes had a separate title; subsequent numbers had titles such as Linnet or Cardinal. This inaugural number includes a story in song about a child match-seller on the streets of the city, as well as a song from the perspective of a freed slave, “The Freedman’s Appeal.” A couple of small marginal paper repairs to the title page. Contemporary ink ownership signature on the front free endpaper.
