The History of America, Books IX. and X. Containing the History of Virginia to the Year 1688; and of New England to the Year 1652.

Philadelphia: Printed from the London Edition by John Humphreys, 1799. First American edition. 8vo, mid-19th century blind-stamped purple cloth, gilt lettering, 196, [2] pages. Spine and board edges somewhat sunned; a very good copy. Item #19441

In a curious later binding that appears almost as a remainder binding (though may well be a well-executed private binding), this volume in Robertson’s History was first published posthumously in London in 1796. The collected edition including these two books did not appear until the so-called eighth edition in London, 1800-1801. With a leaf of ads for Humphrey publications in the rear. Evans 36237; see Howes R-358. With the bookplate on the front pastedown of Charles H. Bell (1823-1893), governor of New Hampshire in 1879 and himself something of an American antiquarian, publishing a history of Exeter, N. H. in 1888.

Price: $250.00
