The Physiology of Digestion Considered with Relation to the Principles of Dietetics . . . from the Third Edinburgh Revised and Englarged Edition.

New-York: William H. Colyer; Boston: Phillips & Sampson, 1848. A later American edition. 12mo, original blind-stamped light blue cloth, gilt lettering, 287, [1] pages. Lower outer corner of the front board damp-stained; a bit of ink staining to the lower joint; some foxing and light wear; a good to very good copy. Item #19672

First published in America in 1836, this edition seems to be taken from Combe’s 1841 Edinburgh edition; with reference to Beaumont. (Combe had first published Beaumont’s work in Edinburgh in 1838.) “In a nation that had so recently and enthusiastically embraced the dietary crusade preached by such figures as Graham, Hitchcock and Alcott, it is not surprising that American publishers responded by issuing at least a dozen editions of Combe’s treatise between 1836 and 1850” (Atwater catalog).
