Large 8vo (11.75 x 9,13 inches), contemporary deep wine half morocco, pebbled cloth sides, gilt lettering, [8] pages plus 303 specimen leaves of printing (generally rectos only; several specimens folding). Numerous instances of color printing and printing in gilt. Spine somewhat sunned, corners a trifle rubbed; a few instances of light foxing or offset; in near fine condition. Item #20786
“The very pleasant task of chronicling the progress of this valuable aid to technical education for typographers has once again come round, and it affords us unalloyed satisfaction to be able to report that the great advance so conspicuously shown by British printers in last year’s collection is not only amply sustained, but moved on a long distance in advance.” (The new British style is here characterized as “neither German nor American, but partaking of both.”) Another beautiful example of this annual collection of specimens from the artistic printing movement, one of approximately 325 copies, drawing heavily on British presses, with contributions from German and Austrian presses—but only four from American sources. This copy from the publisher’s own reference library, with the label mounted to the front pastedown for the De Montfort Press Technical Library, this copy without a binder’s ticket but uniform to other copies seen bound at the publisher’s bindery. Raithby, Lawrence & Co. had bought the periodical British Printer from Hilton in 1890, and kept him on as editor.
