“Mistral, een natuurlijk hanschrift!” A hot metal script typeface designed by Excoffon for the Fonderie Olive in 1953 and released in this version for the Amsterdam Typefoundry. With a 1950s modernist feel, suggested sample uses here are primarily for travel promotion and art. For a detailed treatment of the deep history of the design of Mistral, see Matt Soar’s essay, “Excoffon’s Autograph” (on the prevalence of Mistral in the commercial signs of Montreal) in the Winter 2004 issue of Eye Magazine. This copy with an early pencil sketch of what appears to be a piece of typecasting equipment on the front wrapper and a few stray pencil marks (including the phrase “I love you”) in the text.
