Sammelband collection of three Thomas Paine titles (The Rights of Man in two separately-published parts), issued under the imprints of Scottish radical reform booksellers, plus Sherwin’s Life of Thomas Paine under a reforming Glasgow imprint, as well as a Paine title published earlier by the radical London publisher Richard Carlile.
Various places, 1819 (for the Carlile imprint) but generally 1832 and, 1833. 6 vols in 1, 8vo (7.75 x 4.88 inches), early half calf, marbled sides, red leather spine label lettered in gilt, “Pains [sic] Life &c.” 48; [2], 88; 95, iv, [1]; 44; 12; 24 pages. Joints and corners and board edges somewhat rubbed, with a little cracking to the front joint (but sound); a little closely trimmed in spots; in very good condition. Item #21488
The Scottish imprints date to the period of the Scottish Reform Act of 1832, Paine’s radical ideas on self-governance and revolution being not necessarily readily available to Scottish reformers during the period after the Corn Law agitation and Peterloo—nor indeed during the Greenock Riots of the 1820 Radical War. (See the note to Agrarian Justice.) The Glasgow publisher Muir, Gowans & Co. also published the Loyal Reformers’ Gazette (later the Reformers’ Gazette) from 1831 to 1837.
