New York: Published by S. L. Holbrook & Co., 1836. First edition. Large 8vo (8.88 x 5.5 inches), publishers gilt sheep, 600 pages. Collated and complete. Worn, rubbed, lightly stained throughout; a good copy. Item #21564

“It is true that the United States was originally settled by foreigners, and that we are their descendants, but little reflection is necessary to convince us that those emigrants were entirely unlike those of the present day; that there were not worthless in point of property, ignorant, bigoted, degraded with vice and crime, nor prejudiced in favor of civil and religious slavery.” A comprehensively anti-Catholic and anti-immigrant American history of the Catholic church, from the era of the burning of the Ursuline Convent riots and building perhaps on the contemporary popularity of Morse’s anti-Catholic work, rife with the perfidy of the Jesuits, etc., published under an imprint that on a first pass through the expected copyright records seems only to have been used once for this title. Early pencil ownership signature on the title page of Thomas Lownsbury, with pencil notations (and occasional early ink splashes) in the text; a pencil note in the same hand attributes authorship to Charles Severance, Esq.—an attribution otherwise not followed in any of the standard references. Later ink ownership signature on the verso of the front free endpaper. American Imprints 38039.
