Wie eine Buchdruckschrift ensteht.
Frankfurt, Barcelona, New York: Bauersche Giesserei, (1931). First edition. Original pictorial wrappers (10 x 7.5 inches), 20 pages. Illus. Just a trifle worn; in very good condition. Item #21952
“Den am 15. November 1931 in Berlin versammelten Bibliophilen - zugleich als Ergänzung für die von Publikationskommission des Berliner Bibliophilens-Abends herausgegebenen «Bibliophilen-Abhandlungen» - gewidmet von der Bauerschen Gießerei, Frankfurt am Main.” From the head of the art department at Bauer, an attractive photographic primer of how type is designed and cast. (The distance German design had come since the war is evident in comparison of this rather Bauhaus-inflected book when held up against Rudolf Koch’s Scherenschnitte efforts in the 1918 Die Schriftgiesserei im Schattenbild.) The typeface here being cast for the didactic-promotional purposes of this explanation is Beton (with its curious serif at the baseline of the t), which is also conveniently here used to set the text. OCLC curiously notes only the Victoria & Albert in the UK (with the misspelling of Buchdruckschirft in the title, which, far be it from me to cast stones when spelling out German words, did mean that copy was very nearly unlocated), all suggesting the the bibliophiles were not necessarily hanging onto these separately published supplements.
