“The ultimate goal was to help cure the silent-stolid-Indian syndrome and to put an end to some of the distortions perpetuated by members of other cultures writing about Indians. In short, we hoped to let these young Americans speak for themselves. Given time, we expect them to produce an indigenous American Indian literature.” The first five (out of six) numbers of this annual anthology of Native American student literature from across the United States, published by the Bureau of Indian Affairs under the editorship of Terril “Terry” D. Allen (who lectured on American Indian subjects at U. C. Santa Cruz from 1969-1974); Allen, with her husband Don B. Allen, together wrote several books on Native themes under the supposed pseudonym of T. D. Allen, for which see the finding aid for the Don B. and Terry Diener Allen papers at the University of Oregon. Acetate jackets wrapped around and neatly taped down to nos. 2-4. Traces of light old adhesive to the pastedown of no. 1.
