Highlights and daily sporting life in the career of a player for both the French national team and the French national champion women’s field hockey club (1955-1957), le Racing Club de France. (Amrhein appears to have been a consistent starter at back.) The photos here include small candid snaps of evident practices, copies of commercial photos taken at international matches, a few shots of socializing among the team, and team photos. The album also includes photographs of Amrhein with the French national team at the 1953 International Federation of Women’s Hockey Associations tournament in Folkestone, the top international tournament in the sport, which evolved in 1974 into the Women’s World Cup and subsequently the FIH World Cup. Though men had hockey in the Olympics from 1908, women’s field hockey was not added until 1980—making the IFWHA the closest equivalent of the era to a championship on the international stage.
