Private Devotions for Several Occasions [likely extracted from a copy of The whole duty of man, laid down in a plain and familiar way for the use of all].

London: Printed for Edw. Pawlett, at the Sign of the Bible in Chancery-Lane, near Fleet-Street, 1701. 18mo (5.25 x 3.13 inches), elaborately tooled contemporary black morocco, [i-ii], 267-338, [8] pages, pages ruled in red, t.e.g. Paste paper endpapers. Some slight rubbing, just a trifle tender in the gutter before the blanks; some scattered foxing; in very good condition, quite attractive. Item #22635

With the contemporary ink ownership signature to the front blank Jane Alston, with the pencil signature in same hand of Jane McInnes above that. A beautifully tooled binding in the sombre style with “cottage roof” elements and paneled ornaments. The sombre style enjoyed a vogue from ca. 1680-1720, and is used here with great effect on a devotional work. Perhaps extracted from ESTC N35761, a Pawlett edition of Richard Allestree’s The whole duty of man, laid down in a plain and familiar way for the use of all, which notes, “‘Private devotions’ has a separate titlepage [sic], but pagination and register are continuous,” though that single copy (at Cornell) is noted as an octavo.
